Picking out the right ring can be tricky. First, ask yourself a few questions:
- Are you comfortable buying clothing for her?
- How active is she?
- How hard is she on her hands?
- Will she like platinum, white or yellow gold?
- Should I add side stones or leave it as a solitaire?
The first question is an important one. This ring is something she will be looking at for the rest of her life. If you can shop for clothing for her and know her styles and preferences, then go ahead and pick out the ring. If you are uneasy about this you have a few options. You can have the diamond set in a temporary setting just for doing the presentation. After that, the both of you can come back and sit down with a broker and pick out the final ring design. We will refund you the price of the mounting and your only cost is getting the diamond set.
Your second option is using a diamond viewing box, which is a lovely oak box with a magnified window and a four claw holder for the loose diamond. We loan these out for presentation purposes.
As for the second and third questions, if your significant other is very active and works with her hands a lot, then this should factor in on the ring you choose. A channel or bezel setting is recommended for an active person. This is a very secure setting and the diamond will not sit up high, causing it to snag or catch on items.
Choosing the metal can be a struggle. Some 14kt white gold can start to fade and look yellow over time. Yellow gold goes in and out of fashion and platinum can be costly. To the naked eye, you cannot see the difference between platinum and white gold. The weight of platinum is significant as it's a lot heavier than gold. Platinum is stronger but is harder to polish up so it has to be buffed to get any nicks or scratches out, whereas gold can be lightly polished.
Side stones are a personal preference depending on style, budget, and centre diamond. If you have a sizeable Ultra Ideal cut diamond, adding accent stones might take away from the beautiful diamond youve selected. If you have a smaller diamond but want to add to the look of it, side stones may be a good option. Smaller side stones are not extremely expensive so adding a few in an eye-catching design can make the ring all the more spectacular.
