Both men and women love to rock the look of a killer pair of diamond studs. If you want your ears to sparkle wherever you go, it’ll be important to clean your rocks regularly. The good news is, you don’t have to drop a ton of money on a fancy jewelry cleaning kit. Alberta Diamond Exchange is here to tell you exactly how to clean your diamond earrings at home in between professional inspections.

Tools To Clean Diamond Earrings:

  • Any gentle brush like a toothbrush. We recommend a child’s toothbrush due to its smaller size and light-weight bristles. There are also specialized brushes available, but anything that can remove dirt and debris with a mild grinding action will suffice.
  • A soft cloth for polishing and drying. You can buy a cloth made specifically for cleaning jewelry, but any tightly woven fabric will do the trick, like a microfiber cloth or just a good old rag.
  • An appropriately sized bowl for soaking your jewelry. Whatever you do, DON’T clean your diamond earrings over the sink!
  • Protective gloves—These are optional but recommended to keep potential oils and grime from your fingers away from your jewelry’s surface. It will also protect sensitive skin from potentially irritating chemicals.

Most Commonly Used Cleaning Agents For Diamond Earring:

  • Dish Soap: Choose a liquid dishwashing soap that is non-toxic and free of bleach. Using warm water, combine a few drops of the liquid soap together to create a sudsy mixture.
  • Ammonia: This soaking solution requires only 1 teaspoon of ammonia mixed with 2 teaspoons of liquid soap and ¼ cup of warm water.
  • Bicarbonate of Soda (aka Baking Soda): Mix one part water with three parts baking soda until it becomes a paste. This recipe can be applied to diamond earrings and left on for ten minutes before removing.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide: This is an excellent cleaner that doesn’t require mixing, and has the added benefit of being an anti-bacterial. Just soak your earrings in the solution for 10-15 minutes.

Step-By-Step Cleaning Instructions For Diamond Earrings

  1. Gather all your needed tools and cleaning agents and make sure you are working in a safe place away from sink drains.
  2. Fill your container with the cleaning formula of your choice. If you’re using a solution with warm water, avoid making it boiling hot.
  3. Immerse your diamond earrings into the solution and leave it to soak for at least ten minutes. (Or in the case of a paste, cover the entire surface of the earrings using a soft cloth and let sit.)
  4. After the allotted time, remove the earrings and get to work scrubbing with your brush. Work your way into small crevices to remove all traces of dirt build-up. Repeat the soak and scrub steps if necessary.
  5. When you are satisfied that the earrings are clean, rinse them thoroughly in warm water. Again, avoid rinsing over the sink and opt instead for a second bowl of clean water.
  6. Use your soft cloth to dry and polish your diamond earrings until they sparkle.

Don’t forget that it’s also beneficial to regularly bring your diamond earrings and other fine jewelry in for professional inspections at least twice a year.
