What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Did you know that we’ve learned how to make our own diamonds? The natural process of forming a diamond takes millions of years, but creating our own diamonds only takes a few weeks.

How are Diamonds Grown in a Lab?

There are two processes that can be done to create a diamond.
  • High pressure high temperature (HPHT) is a process for creating diamonds from a small diamond seed that is set in carbon then exposed to high heat and pressure. The carbon melts and forms a diamond around that seed which are equivalent to natural diamonds
  • Chemical Vapor Deposit: In the CVD process, a diamond seed is placed inside of a carbon-rich hydrogen and methane gas. More carbon is added layer by layer. This is the fastest method for creating diamonds which can be done in fourteen days.

Natural Versus Lab Grown Diamonds

Natural and lab grown diamonds can be incredibly difficult to tell apart because they are almost the same. There are two tests that can be done to determine whether a diamond is lab grown or natural. The first test is by determining the diamond type. Since all lab grown diamonds come out as type IIa diamonds and only 2% of natural grown diamonds fit into this category, there is a good chance it is lab grown if it’s type IIa. Another way to test if a diamond is lab grown is to give it a radiation test. Lab grown diamonds have different light patterns than natural diamonds, so a trained professional will be able to spot the difference. Since lab grown diamonds are relatively simple to make, they are much cheaper than their natural counterparts which took eons to develop. However, lab grown diamonds still offer the same brilliant dazzle and appear as though they’d been crafted near the heart of the earth.
