Did you know that we’ve learned how to make our own diamonds? The natural process of forming a diamond takes millions of years, but creating our own diamonds only takes a few weeks.
How are Diamonds Grown in a Lab?
There are two processes that can be done to create a lab-grown diamond.
- High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT): This method uses high pressure and temperature to form diamonds from a small diamond seed placed in carbon.
- Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD): In this process, a diamond seed is exposed to carbon-rich gases, which deposit layers of carbon to form a diamond.
Distinguishing Lab-Grown from Natural Diamonds
Lab-grown and natural diamonds are almost identical. Tests like diamond type analysis and radiation tests can reveal their origin. Lab-grown diamonds are generally more affordable and have a smaller environmental impact, making them an attractive option for many buyers.
